This was the first I saw of Steven Universe. I thought it was a pretty song and looked cool, but I didn’t watch any of the actual series till way after.
I was told by the bf that it had lots of anime references in, which I didn’t know till after I wiki’d it. It’s creator, Rebecca Sugar, also did some of the best Adventure Time songs while she was working on it. Which is why some of the songs sound eerily similar to Adventure Time songs. And it’s why I like the series. It’s like a more coherent, less disjointed/random Adventure Time, but based around magical girl mythos. The Crystal Gems are at the heart of the plot, and not every episode has main plot in it, but there’s definitely an over-arcing plot. More so than I felt Adventure Time ever had. Which I do still like, but I think I like Steven Universe even more now…
Explaining actual plot could ruin anything, but let it be known, there are many clever little references to geeky things, mainly games and anime. See how many you can spot 😉
These are the main gems by the way, dubbed the Crystal Gems. Their human form is just a magical projection from their gems, and it can change and regenerate if they get wounded badly, remind you of anything? 😉 Plot wise things get… interesting. And there’s a dark underside to everything.

Garnet is the tallest, most dead pan and most serious gem. She can have fun when she wants to though.

Pearl is the most mature gem, most elegant and most worrisome. She acts most like a guardian to Steven.

Rose Quartz is Steven’s mother, who gave up her physical form to give Steven Life. (Only one Rose Quartz may exist at a time.)
